I realized that after all this time, since the blog started a couple of years ago, I have never really written about why I love cooking and food. And since food is synonymous to cooking, for me, I am going to talk about food.
What makes food so interesting to me?
"Food is the only beautiful thing that nourishes your soul", said Richard Gere in Autumn in New York. And I concur. Food is a universal language because you don't need to speak to understand what good food is. Food gives you a sense of comfort and a feeling of contentment on particularly hard days and on times when you have your loved ones around. Food is and has always been all about giving.
All mothers show their love via the food they make for their children because the act of feeding is an act of love and protection. No culture would be complete without a food to call their own. And I am proud to say that I come from a culture where food is a platform for connecting with people and loved ones - when someone dies, when someone lives, when someone gets promoted, when someone is born, when someone comes home, when someone is leaving, we always sit and eat together. There is no explanation to this; only a sense of belonging.
Again, what makes food so interesting to me?
Sustenance. On many different levels that only food can give. A container of vanilla sugar may not last forever like a teddy bear but like flowers, their impermanence makes it all the more special - all the more nourishing - all the more giving, and abstractly lasting - in a very tasty sort of way.
I have met so many people who has shared their cuisine and recipes online that I feel connected and comforted even though I do not know them personally.
Food does that and that is why it is so interesting to me.
